·  The above map shows the average lightning density in number of lightning strokes per square kilometer calculated from data obtained by the Observatory's Lightning Location Network. In preparing the map, some interpolation and smoothing of data have been carried out.

·  The number of lightning strokes and areas affected by lightning may vary from year to year. As the lightning density shown on the map is based on past data only, it does not represent the future trend.
